jack_lo_..._t_o
As part of the CONTACT Photo festival going on, the AF at Spadina & Bloor is showing the work of two African (Mali) Photographers from the 20th century, very different in style, but both with stunning and absorbing images. It doesnt hurt that the prints are huge, some about 3' X 4'. I highly recommend that anyone in T.O. make a point to see it. Also starting tomorrow till June 5 at the AWOL gallery, 76 Ossington, my beautiful and talented friend Karina Kraenzle is showing her photo-based art. Be sure to attend, and bring your VISA card. jack_lo_..._t_o
The names of the two Mali photographers would be: Seydou Keita, whose approach was more formal, and Malick Sidibe, who is more of a street photographer. Sidibe is still alive, but most of the pix are from the 60s.
gubo
I believe Malick Sibide, who must be in his 70s, still maintains a photo studio in Bamako for formal portraiture and that his house serves as a kind of unofficial crash pad for local artists and photographers in transit. Within the last few years he was recognized as a Hasselblad award winner.
