Teleconverter with Nikon 80-200 ED

Is it possible to use a Teleconverter on Nikon 80-200 F/2.8 ED-N ?

I heard that Nikon does not make TC for this gr8 lens. Does any third

party TC work with it ? Kenko or Tamron? is it the design which does

not allow the addition of TCs ?

I hope to be totally clear in this matter. (Different version of the

lens make it confusing.)

Thanl you.

TC-14B works very well with this lens. You lose 1 stop of light, you lose

AF function. At f5.6 - 8 you get quite good, contrasty pics. This is the one

with which I have experience.

Some have had good luck with Kenko or other 3rd party TCs. Some of

them allow you to AF the AF lens. But I have no experience with these.

Perhaps someone else can jump in here.

The Kenko Pro 300 or Tamron SP converters work well with this lens and retain all autofocus functions and exposure modes. As already noted, the manual focus TC-14B also works very well, but you lose autofocus and S and P exposure modes.

For some reason Nikon never saw fit to manufacture an autofocus teleconverter for the AF-D lenses, and abandoned that market completely to the independents. Even though almost every lens in the current Nikon lineup that will work well with a TC is an AF-S lens (that accepts the E converters) the 80~200/2.8D (along with the 180/2.8D) remains in production to point out to all the gaping hole in the teleconverter range that existed before the AF-I and AF-S era. Nikon could have easily added the mechanical drive to the E converters to drive AF-D lenses but instead chose not to, and in fact added an additional lug to the bayonet to prevent them from being mounted on all but a select few AF-S lenses.
