glenroy
Hi all, I am interested to know about the focusing speed of the 85mm 1.8 lens for indoor volleyball. I currently use the Sigma 70-200 2.8, and a 50mm 1.4, as well as the 300mm 4.0 (in good light). I will be using it on the 10D and 20D at this stage. Also I have been trying the 24-70 2.8 and found it a little slow in focusing. Has anyone else tried this lens and found it slow to focus in action sports? Thanks Glen. rainer_t
Glen, my 85/1.8 is focusing noticably faster than my 50/1.4. Besides that, it seems to me, that the 85 has the more consistent and reliably focus. Rainer
glenroy
Thanks Rainer. On which body are you using it on? I herad it was reasonably fast in focusing. GD
rainer_t
Glen, I use them on a 300D (Digital Rebel) and on a 300 (nonD). Rainer
jmichaelc
A good lens for this application would be the 100MM F2. One of canon's best and somewhat unknown. Auto focus is super fast....much much faster than the 1.4 and much sharper wide open.
lovcom_photo
Agree with Jammey, but I want to add that the Canon 135L focuses even faster, and provides noticably better color and contrast then the 85mm & all the 100mm's. The 135L is also sharper too.
dcheung
It's pretty damn fast and accurate. I bought the 85 1.8 with the sole purpose of indoor volleyball and i have to say i'm pretty satsified. (I use a 20D) The only thing that my rival it is the 135 f2 or the 200 1.8 but it's hard to find the 200 1.8 these days. I find the 135 to be a bit too long. grant g
The 85/1.8 works very well for indoor volleyball. I've used it on 300D, 10D, and 30D for that. No problems on One Shot or AI Servo modes. Just don't expect it to get spiked balls coming at you!
willhl
<i>"Just don't expect it to get spiked balls coming at you!"</i> <p>I have enough trouble tracking spiked balls coming at me on court!</P> <p>Useful topic, I've been thinking about the 85mm for volleyball and it seems to fit the bill quite well but it is still some way off for me as I'm still working on my general kit. However I've just added the Sigma 70-200 to it, now I just need to post some of the pic's it takes . . .</P> <p>Glen, when you say the 24-70, I assume you are talking about the Canon lens as the Sigma does not have HSM but I thought I'd check.</p>
glenroy
Thanks all for the contributions. I might lash out on the 85mm F1.8 as I feel that the 100mm, 135mm might be too long for what I'm after. It is mostly court side action thatI want to capture. I find that the Sigma 70-200 is almost perfect for other distances from around the court. And yes the 24-70 F2.8L is the canon. Cheers, Glen
ralph_burch
Glenn: I use a 70-200 2.8 IS and an 85 1.8 for indoor volleyball. The 85 1.8 is preferrable based on low light performance. I don't think you can go wrong with this lens, especially on your 1.6 crop cameras (I use it on a 20D).
juancar
I use the 85 1.8 with the 5D and it's faster than the 1.4 . Recently I use the 85 for tenis (outdoor) and It works fine with good light and at sunset (with higher ISO)....
