andrew robertson Posted July 16, 2006 Share Posted July 16, 2006 Sphinx moths are in my top three list of 'coolest moths'. People often mistake them for hummingbirds. It's pretty easy to tell them apart, though. The hummingbird beats its wings a bit faster than the sphinx (perhaps because the moth has more wing area?), and the sphinx doesn't make the characteristic 'light saber' noise that hummingbirds do.
