mark_guthrie
Hi. I bought an SB-600 for my Nikon D70 this week. I'm informally shooting a wedding in two weeks and I wanted some better lighting. I'm trying to use the on-board flash as the master and the SB-600 as a fill-in slave, but I can't get the two to go off together. Does anybody know how to do this? Also, does anyone have any recommendations on how to use flashes for a wedding? Thanks, Mark
juri_vosu
Mark, I have a feeling that the SB-800 will remote trigger from your D70 flash. The cheaper less powerfull SB-600 will not. Go to Nikon web site to confirm.
nilesullivan
I don't think you can get them to go off together, but you can use the onboard flash to trigger the sb600
I have the same camera/flash and I must admit that I also had some trouble figuring out how to do this.
on the camera:
in the CSM menu, turn #14 command dial ON
also in the CSM menu, set #19 flash menu to commander mode
On the flash
hold down zoom & minus button and press the mode button until you see the zig-zag arrow symbol, push mode to turn it ON
at this point you can flip up your on camera flash, trip the shutter and the built-in flash will trigger the sb600.
Good luck. bwcombs
Page 60 in the SB600 manual. Page 150 in the D70 manual. Make sure that you are in Commander Mode on the D70 in the custom menu for flash, and the SB600 is set accordingly. You must be in Manual, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority or Program mode to use this as well. The built-in flash on the D70 works very well as a trigger for a remote SB600 or SB800. bwcombs
Juri, the "cheaper, less powerful" SB600 is capable of remote use with the onboard D70 flash, or the SB800 as a master. Cheaper yes. But quite capable. It's a great second or third light to have available.
frank_skomial
I assume that you know the D70 flash limitations, that is it will command SB-600 but only on 1 channel, and in 1 group. The D70 buit-in flash should command the SB-600 if channel and group are set right, and the shooting distance and the angle of coverage is within specifications. errol
You cannot get the 70 to be the primary or fill flash. When it commands it just sends info to the 800 through the flashes but it does not add to the exposure at all. I think that the D200 built in flash does. I have yet to use this setup because of the way I shoot. Dialing up the command mode on the 70 and the slave mode on the 800 takes too long and when you finally have all set up there is too much of a time lag between hitting the button and the exposure. The flashes take too much time to talk to eachother. What I use is a SC29 cord for off camera shots. works as if the flash were on the hot shoe. Range is limited by the cord but i don't need the flash far away. Errol

Doing close-up or macro work it's not true, and you may need to bounce the internal flash away from the subject, or use IR filtration.
allen_birnbach6
Is there a way to control the output of the on camera flash so that it is strong enough to trigger the SB 600, but not add a lot a fill on its own?
paul_aylett1
There is an excellent article on the subject here: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/ittlslave.htm
