joseph_barbano Posted May 22, 2005 Posted May 22, 2005 While trying to view some photos from my son's D-560, I popped the 256MB XD card into the XD-slot of my computer and the computer responded "The disk is not formatted. Would you like to format the disk?". I did NOT format the disk but popped it back into the camera and was unable to read the pictures. In fact, the camera menu prompted me to "Format now" or "Power Off". I then installed CAMEDIA 4.1 to try and read the photos via the camera/USB connection and the S/W did not recognize the camera. I think the card may be corrupted. Not sure. Is there some way of rescuing the photos? Thanks in advance.
Aoresteen Posted May 23, 2005 Posted May 23, 2005 The file system on media cards under 2 GIG is DOS FAT 16. By using a reader atached to you computer it is possible to salvage the data (images) from the card. Try puting it into another camera to see it if is recogized.
maury_cohen Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 I had a similar experience with a SmartMedia card and Oly camera. After bein in a friends reader it would no longer function. You may need to replace the card. If it's under a year old you can probably get it replaced under warranty.
Aoresteen Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 You can always format the card (this will cause loss of any data on it). If the card will not format then you should return it as defective. When a card won't read it's usally beacuse the FAT16 directory info has been lost. A format will create a new FAT (File Allocation Table).
ambersolaire Posted June 7, 2005 Posted June 7, 2005 This just happened to me with an Olympus 512 MB xD card and Olympus Stylus 410, while transferring pix to a Windows 2K Server via a Digital Concepts 9 in 1 Card Reader. The only thing I did any different was to use 'Unplug or Eject Hardware' to stop the card reader from the Windows system tray BEFORE I ejected the xD card...DOH!!!!! As soon as it was inserted in the camera or reader again it reported need of formatting... any way to repair this with some utility? Thx.
