How to get 3200 asa on a Rebel XT?

Are you sure you want it? ISO 3200 on this class of DSLR is really faked by the camera doing just what you describe. But the disadvantage of the camera doing it, compared to you doing it manually, is if the image is overexposed, the camera will initially capture it correctly (when it shoots one stop under), but then will blow out the highlights when it blindly cranks exposure up a stop. By comparison, if you manually underexpose as stop and then find out that there was more light than you anticipated, then you avoid blowing out the highlights by not raising the exposure quite so much.

The only time that ISO 3200 in the camera makes sense, IMO, is if you are in an extremely time limited situation, like shooting professional sports or news, and there is no time for post processing--out of the camera is the final product that goes to press. If this isn't your situation, you are much better off by manually underexposing a stop and later raising exposure as much as is needed.
