Elan 7N body with EOS 28-135 IS lens combination question

My son has a Canon Elan 7N and 28-135 IS lens and recently acquired a

70-200 f4 lens. With the 70-200 the top LCD display indicates if

focusing in manual or automatic. With the 28-135 IS lens there is no

indication indicating manual or automatic. The autofocus switch on

the IS lens has no affect whether switched to AF or MF. Is this lens

working properly?

I've owned six EF lenses (not all at the same time), including the 28-135, and have used various of them on an Elan II, Elan 7E, and 20D. In every case, the camera knew, and indicated, whether the lens was in MF or AF mode. Your son's body should behave the same way, and it should be the same with either lens.

My Elan 7E recognizes the AF or MF on all 3 of my EF lenses. Both on the LCD display and MF blinks in the viewfinder I believe. Do not have mine in front of me and habitually switch to MF when changing lenses, then back to AF after the lense change. I have the habit, . . .so seldom do I notice the MF blink in the viewfinder. You are not referring to Focus Selection Points are you? I think one of my lenses does not display the Point if in Auto Focus Point selection or something like that.

Before I would consider the lens in need of repair, I would do the normal contact cleaning, etc., etc..
