namikphoto
Hello everyone. Almost two weeks ago I got the 550ex. I bought it new over the Internet from one of the on-line photo shops. I've been trying to run number of test on this unit and I've noticed that the zoom is quite noisy. It actuall does not maintain the same sound when I change the zoom config between pre=programed levels - 24 mm, 50 mm, etc... Is this normal ? I'm worried that they may have sold me unit that was either dropped or is not working properly. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Namik
vincent_j_m
Mine makes a little whining noise when zooming. It's been going strong for years now. Try and find another 550EX and check it out.

david_lau3
Noisy is subjective. It makes a sound when zooming but perfectly acceptable to me. I have used mine for 5 years and taken over 5,000 flash photos without any problem.
jespdj
Mine makes some noise too, but I don't know what "quite noisy" means to you. Go to a local store, ask if you can see a 550EX and try zooming with it (you can do it manually), and compare if it sounds the same as your unit. namikphoto
Thank you all for your responses. Yesterday I had a chance to compare my unit with another 550ex and definatelly there is a clicking sound when I change zoom between 50, 70 mm and 105mm. My next step is to visit Canon and have them check it out.
