Do Canon lenses identify focus distance in EXIF data?

The answer is, it depends on the body.

I find it odd for newer models not to report this, since E-TTL II bodies/flashes will use distance information (if the lens reports it) for flash calculations, so the bodies (with appropriate lenses) should have this information available, but appearantly Canon decided not to export this data.

There are some reasonably inexpensive laser rangefinders out there...

Sorry about the repost...the first was formatted...poorly.

Actually, Chuck Westfall did post recently on Robgalbraith that a request had been made to Canon Japan to enable recording of distance information via new versions of firmware for more recent bodies. Keep an eye on firmware updates.
