lisa_johnson
I'm a photo student and have so far only worked in 35mm. I've been looking into buying a second hand Yashica (because that is the type we have at my university and I know the bare essentials about them). Anyways, I'm confused as to the differences between models: i.e. is a Yashica-Mat TLR different than a regular Yashica-Mat? or a Yashica-Mat 124? Is a Yashica-D better than a Yashica-Mat? Also, if the description of the camera says that it is a 120-roll film, does that mean that a 220 or other type would not work in that model? Any info you could provide would be excellent - don't hold back! Thanks alot...Lisa
john_c.
Lisa: what you want is a Yashica Mat 124G. This was the last version made and has the best lens. You can find these for sale in shops that advertise in Shutterbug (and many have their own web sites). A 124G in mint condition with a functioning meter and case goes for around $300. If they're asking more, negotiate with them. You may also want to consider a Rolleicord Va or Vb. These were built in the late 50s, and were built like tanks. In mint condition, they're a little more than the 124G, but in my opinion (as well as others) the lens is a bit better that the 124G's. As for film size, the 124G can take 120 or 220 film. The Rolleicords take only 120.
bobatkins
Read http://www.eecs.tufts.edu/~jalbro/impact/yashica66.guide.html
Though the 124G is the most recent model, don't pass up a good "D"or a "Mat". They're both capable of excellent results and can befound significantly cheaper than the 124G.
jim_thomas1
Although the Mat 124-G is the best of the Yashica TLRs, you will also be happy with just about any of the other Yashica-Mats, provided they are in good condition and have not been abused. I use a 124-G, as well as a "D" and an "A". I also have owned several other Yashica-Mats, and they perform well if they are in decent condition. The Yashikor lens can be every bit as good as the Yashinon found on the earlier Yashica-Mats, but the Yashinon lens on the 124-G seems to outperform the others, particularly in terms of color rendition and contrast. There has been a suggestion that this lens may be multicoated, and although I can't prove this to be true, it sure seems likely. Take a look at my website "Classic Rollfilm Cameras", where you will find pictures of several Yashica-Mats, as well as a brief review of each. jim_amatruda
Lisa, You might want to log onto http://ebay.com to check out the auctions on medium format cameras. There are plenty of Yashicamat 124 G TLR's for sale, from $100-$300 depending on condition and extras. Keep in mind that you'll be bidding on something sight unseen, so be sure to read the feedback other people have given about the seller of a specific item. At a minimum, the description should state whether the shutter speeds work, the state of the lens, and the overall condition of the camera. Good luck!
