charles_mason
A year or two ago I read a piece, somewhere on the web, along thelines of why the M4 was the best Leica ever. Sound familiar toanyone? If so do you know where this is/was? I haven't had any luckwith Googling it. Thanks,Charles
Guest
Yes, it's not on the internet anymore. I'll email it to you - Roy Moss, 'Last of the Truly Great Leicas.'
nemeng
FWIW I've collected a few M4 related links in the Leica FAQ I maintain at:
 http://www.nemeng.com/leica/002bd.shtml
What I think you're looking for is the LHSA Viewfinder article by Roy Moss (Viewfinder Volume 34, #3, 2001). This used to be available online as a PDF file, but a while back the wise people at LHSA decided to lock out non-members from accessing it. Don't know what the current policy is... Rob F.
By the way, you can find an article telling why the M2 and M3 are the greatest Leicas, as well. I've seen both in the Viewfinder.

john_boyle3
The late Roy Moss had some excellent articles in Viewfinder, one of which was "The Leica M2, the Finest of the Leica M's". I printed a copy of this article as well as another entitled "The Leica M4, The Last of the Truly Great Leicas". If anyone NEEDS a copy of these articles send me an email. I have had both a 1958 M2 and a 1967 M4 for over 30 years and would agree that the M2 has the edge in build quality, although they are both excellent cameras. My M4 required a new viewfinder due to prism separation. Others (our friend Jay) had the same experience with an M2. This seems to be an isolated problem with individual cameras.
