ben_allin
Hello. I will be buying the Nikin D200 and have yet to determinewhich compact flash card would be the best. Someone suggested theSony 5gb Compact Vault and others the Lexar 2gb Pro Series CF card. Iwould like to get the fastest one for the camera and one that would dothe best job. Any advice would be great. Thanks a lot.
gandicarter
Personally, I find that 2GB is a little small for that camera. I store RAW + JPEG and would get about 100 images on a 2GB card. I find that's enough for most days but often I do end up swapping out to a 1GB card while depositing images into an Epson P2000 so that I can keep going. I'll be looking for a bigger card soon. david_h._hartman
Ben,

The Sony Compact Vault is a micro-drive. If dropped its probably toast. It will probably be quite slow and hold up your D200.

I recommend a couple of 2GB (or perhaps larger) SanDisk Extreme III CF cards or a Lexar equivalent. The SanDisk Extreme III(s) come with a very useful recovery and security utility called SanDisk RescuePRO. If you buy a lessor card Id buy at least one Ex III for the software, e.g. one 2GB Ex III and one 4GB Ultra II. I also recommend the Lexar USB 2.0 Multi-Card Reader.

It makes sense to buy for the near future but dont buy more capacity than you will need in the next few months. The prices on CF cards are dropping from time to time. A 2GB Ex III now cost about what I paid for a couple of 1GB Ex III(s) a year ago.

Best,

Dave Hartman. ben_allin
Great. Thanks so much for your input on this. I will go as you suggest and get a couple of 2gb or just one for now and see how it goes. The camera is not here yet so i have time to wait and get a card when the prices are down. Again, thanks for your input as it was very helpful!
Mike D
I recently purchased a micro drive for use on my D-200 as backup in case I need extra image storage in the field. I haven't been able to determine if it is substantially slower than my SanDisk II cards. However, I photograph a lot of moving subjects and I like to checkout the LCD screen after taking a shot and the micro drive I use is so slow it makes the feedback process almost worthless. If you only do static images, this may not be a problem. I do like having the extra gigs of storage in my CF wallet.
ben_allin
Michael: Thanks for the input. I appreciate all of the input. Have you compared a 80X speed with a 133X speed? Just wonder if there is any difference you can tell. Thanks again
