russ_selzer
I have just purchased my first Canon (5D) after owning Nikons from the Nikon F to the D2X. I have the EX580 flash and I am trying to become accustomed to the Canon "way." When using the flash with the camera in the A mode (aperture priority), I surmise that the camera chooses the shutter speed based on the selected aperture and the ambient lighting conditions, and does not default to a value like 1/60 sec except when one sets a custom function on the flash to always use 1/200 sec in A mode with flash. My question: Do folks use the M mode (manual) with the flash in indoor situations (weddings, etc) in order to set the aperture and shutter speed or do folks use the P mode (program)? Thanks. JosvanEekelen
see www.photonotes.org for some info about Canon flash. To answer your questions: with M you have more control, but the flash is still automatic/E-TTL. I only use P when I'm in a hurry and don't have time to set all the controls. david_honl1
With my 1DS/580 setup, I almost always set the camera manually for the most control over depth of field, background motion blur, etc. When lighting for portraits, I'll also set the flash manually as I've nailed down those settings over the years.
