Tele-Lentar Lens - Dual F-Stop Rings

Greetings to the people of photo.net,

I recently picked up a vintage Lentar lens, it reads "Tele-Lentar 1:5.5 300mm"

and I bought it along with a Minolta X-370 which it fits into. The lens is very

clean and usable, and so is the body and its stock(?) lens. The curious thing

about this Lentar lens is that it seems to have 2 f-stop rings in addition to

the manual focus. Could someone please explain the 2 f-stop rings and how

they're used? I am excited by the new lens and some advice would be well

appreciated.

Thank you!

Whenever in doubt about such mechanical things, just look through the lens and fiddle with the two rings. I think their principle of operation will become self-evident, once you observe their action. Good luck; that is how we oldies used lenses in the old days ...

Those 'preset' type lenses are still being made because they are a viable budget allternative for those that want a tele lens.

Only the 500mm f8 version is available though -the 300/5.5 and 400/6.3 versions are long gone. The 300mm is especially pointless these days because any good consumer telezoom can equal or beat it.

In the 500mm class there is nothing that comes close to a preset lens for price verses performance. They are a definite step up image quality wise from cheapo mirror lenses -even though they are a similar price
