randall_pukalo
What is the best way to cut 645 sleeved film? I have seen 35mm film cutters (usually part of a slide mounting kit), but never anything for medium format films. Does anyone have any advice on what to use? (I tried an exacto blade and steel rule, but this leaves a lot to be desired). Thanks in advance.
Ed_Ingold
Gepe makes a dedicated film cutter for 120, complete with a built-in light table. I use an inexpensive, 6x8 inch Exacto guillotine cutter, placed over a light table so I can see the gap between images. It's easy to get a straight, accurate cut through the sleeve. I've used scissors before, but it's hard to hold the film straight. This is better.
mike_elek
A good pair of sharp sewing scissors will do the job quite nicely. I'm using the Clauss brand with a 4-inch blade (Model 3218). Sewing scissors for dressmaking work well, because they cut straight. Dressmakers don't like it when scissors cut in an unintended arc. A light table is a big plus when cutting film. For 35mm, I'm using this little Polaroid gizmo that's like a mini-paper cutter with guillotine blade.
michael_ferron1
I use a regular paper cutter with a guillotine blade. Works good for me.
charlesp
"Gepe makes a dedicated film cutter for 120, complete with a built-in light table. " So I've heard. It just seems impossible to find or order. Any sources?
Ed_Ingold
B&H carries Gepe film cutters. The only one they carry for 120 film is for 6x6 individual slides.
charlesp
You're right Edward. I just don't understand why they don't carry the cutter for 6x7 film. And I'm puzzled why no one seems to make a cutter for 645 film. I wonder if there's any reason why the 6x7 Gepe cutter wouldn't work with 645. Anyone know? ulrich_ploedereder
In former times Gepe builds cutters for 6x7, 6x6, 6x4.5 and 4x4, the latter I have. The problem is the gepe cutters cuts both sides of the slide all at once so it's rather difficult to cut a slide with a different format than the cutter is build for.
