How Many Lenses Have You Owned?

An earlier thread on how many lenses do you own started me thinking

about how many I've had. Today I have the Nikon 24 2.8 AF, 35 2.0

AF, 50 1.8 AF, 70-200 G VR AFS (on order), 300 4.0 AF, and Tamron 90

2.8 AF and 1.4x SP TC.

 

In the past I've owned a Tokina 19-35, Sigma 24 2.8 AF (x3), Sigma

28 MF, Canon 28 EF, Tamron Adaptall 28 MF, Nikon 28-80 G, Tamron 28-

200 Super LD, Kiron 28-80 MF, another Nkon 35 2.0 AF, Nikon 35-70

AF, Canon 50 1.4 EF, Canon 50 1.8, Nikon Series E 50 1.8 (x6), Nikon

30-60 (for APS), Nikon 85 1.8 AF, JC Penney 135 MF, Nikon 180 2.8

AF, Vivitar Series E 70-210, Nikon 70-300 AF G, Sigma 70-300 AF,

Nikon Series E 75-150, Nikon 75-300 AF, Nikon 80-200 2.8, Tamron 100-

300 AF, Tokina 400 5.6 plus various Kenko extenders, Nikon diopters,

and the odd filter or two.

 

That's approaching 40 lenses. Maybe that's why I'm working on paring

down to three or four top quality zooms.

Why? That is a list of pretty good quality optics you have now and have had before. It is highly unlikely that you will get the close focusing, sheer optical quality and easy handling from zooms, certainly not for macro.

 

The important thing is that when you want some glass, you have something on hand that will get the effect and quality you want.

This goes back a long way!<p>Canon FL 58mm f/1.2, Canon FD 50mm f/1.8. There was a Canon FD 28mm f/2.8 that still belongs to my brother. I recall a 70-210mm f/4 third party zoom in FD mount too. I wonder if the family still has it? That's at least 2 lenses in FL/FD mount that have been sold off.<p>Then onto Nikons:<p>24mm f/2.8 AIS (had a scratch on the rear element), 24mm f/2.8 AI (I never should have sold this one). I'm now on my third 24mm f/2.8, an AI version as I like the longer focusing throw.<p>28mm f/2.8 AIS. I hate it when people ship lenses to me without a rear cap. The rear element gets scratched! Otherwise, I'd still have this lens. I now use a 28mm f/3.5 PC Nikkor instead.<p>35mm f/2.8 AIS - the first Nikkor that I ever owned. Sadly, it was really fuzzy and bad.<p>35mm f/2 AIS - actually a very nice lens. I sold it in order to get the f/1.4. I do miss it's compact size.<p>50mm f/1.4 AI, 50mm f/1.8 Series E, 50mm f/1.4 AIS. Yes, I actually cycled through all these in the quest for the perfect 50mm lens. At one point I owned 6 x 50mm lenses. I still have a 50mm f/1.4 AIS (another one), and my original 50mm f/1.8 AI. Yet, I'm still contemplating getting the 45mm f/2.8 AI-P. I have an obsession with 50mm lenses, it seems. I see that John has gone through 6 Series E 50mm lenses, so I'm not alone! Yes, it is probably only a matter of time before I start lusting after an f/1.2 lens. After all, that's what I started photography with (the Canon 58mm f/1.2).<p>I almost forgot the 55mm f/2.8 Micro Nikkor. It was a great lens. I sold it when I got a 60mm f/2.8 Micro Nikkor. Sometimes I wish I'd kept the 55mm - it was great at infinity too.<p>85mm f/2 AIS - gave one away, then had to buy myself another when I missed it.<p>Kiron 135mm f/2.8 close focus, and Vivitar 90mm Micro. They were nice lenses, but I already had the 70-180mm Micro Nikkor.<p>200mm f/3.5 Vivitar. The seller purchased it back in exchange for a 200mm f/4 Nikkor. I used the Nikkor for a while, then the high speed bug caught me, and I sold it in favor of the 180mm f/2.8 ED AIS.<p>Let's see - I count about 16 lenses.<p>Some of these I'm glad to get rid of (the ones with rear element damage, the 35mm f/2.8, and the Vivitar 200 - it focused the wrong way). However, I do miss to varying degrees the rest of them. Now I know why David Hartman always condemns Nikon Liquidation Syndrome (NLS) as evil!

Yikes, you guys really have me beat by a long country mile!

 

My Nikkors are: AF 50mm f/1.4D; AF 20-35mm f/2.8D zoom; AF 35-70mm f/2.8D zoom, AF 80-200mm f/2.8D zoom; AF 28-105mm f/3.5-5.6D zoom; AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6D zoom; and, AF 85mm f/1.8D.

 

(I got rid of the Tamron 70-300mm after using it on one occasion, before I finished one roll of film)(I gave my 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6D to one of my students when I got the 35-70mm f/2.8D).

 

So, I have only seven lenses.

I don't remember but I've sold more lenses from other camera systems I owned before switching to Nikon. I don't have many Nikkors and probably won't buy many. I tend to stick with what I absolutely need and consider each purchase carefully.

 

I don't really count the couple of Tamron Adaptalls and handful of T-mounts. They fit almost any camera I've owned or am likely to own.

Nothing to envy about, Joe. I am ashamed to have quite a few lenses taking up space and not seeing any action.

 

All my lenses (almost all that is) were bought for actual use, be it a museum piece like the 62mm f/2 UV-Planar or a Spiratone lens.

Gee.. I thought we had alot, but maybe because I seem to try to take most of them with me at one time!

 

Pentax: 1 50mm 1.4 for my Spotmatic

 

Nikon: 4 AF 18-35, 28-105, 70-300 ED and 80-200 2.8.

 

Tamron: 28-105 3.5-5.6

 

We have 2 Nikon AF bodies and my husband and I were always both wanting to use the Nikon 28-105, he didn't want to spend more and get another Nikon lens so he got the Tamron. Now we have "discussions" over who's gonna use the *Nikon* 28-105! (My N90s focuses fast with his Tamron, but his N80 hunts like mad with the Tamron).

 

If we're shooting at the same time, he prefers the 70-300, and I like the 80-200.

 

I'm the only one who uses the 18-35 tho. He hasn't gotten into the whole wideangle scene.

 

Next lens? If a good DSLR comes out between the D70 and the D2X/D2H that has a viewfinder I can live with, I'll look into getting the kit lens. Can't spend too much - I'll need a new flash to go with that DSLR....

I only buy Nikkor glass. With the exception of what I've given my son (and then replaced for myself) I still own every lens I've ever bought.

 

I've one zoom, the rest are primes.
