steve_yeatts
I'm looking at various MF systems, and I'm interested in the Bronica GS, mostlydue to the 6X7 format. Do the backs rotate to allow a portrait orientation likethe Mamiyas? Thanks.
pavelp
No, the backs do not rotate. There is a rotary prism available that allows you to rotate the whole camera while the finder stays unrotated but that's not really as convenient as Mamiya's rotary backs. robbie_caswell
I used a pan tilt head on a tripod with or without the grip and it worked perfectly, and allowed minute adjustments. The GS1 is no behemoth even as 6X7 goes but make sure the tripod and head are sturdy and well balanced. Never bought the rotating prism so not sure how that would work. richard baznik
Bronica sells (sold) a 90-degree rotating tripod mount for the GS-1 that is rock-solid, convenient, and available used, but it's too expensive. I also just use the pan capability of the tripod. In additions to the other cautions about a solid tripod, make sure you secure the camera firmly to the tripod head (or QL plate) because it has a tendency to rotate otherwise. danaher_m_dempsey_jr
You can always buy a 6x6 back or a 6x4.5 back to get around the rotation of the camera if you want a portrait orientation.
