jeff_forbes
I have discovered a strange (to me) problem with my 300D. The mirror assembly seems to be built into two seperate pieces, the main mirror itself, and another small mirror that basically sits right in front of the shutter. When the main mirror flips up, this secondary mirror flips up into the back of the main mirror. Well, it seems that mine is sticking. When the secondary mirror is stuck in the "down" position, the camera takes a picture, autofocus is functional. But, as it is stuck in the down position, when the shutter opens, it only captures the top of the image, as most of it is being blocked. When it is stuck in the "up" position, autofocus seems to be totally nonfunctional, but the camera shoots fine images in manual focus mode. Is this problem a common/easy to fix one, or does it seem weird? My camera is out of warranty, so whomever repairs it, I'm paying. Just looking for a second opinion before I run to the camera repair shop.
skip_martin
I've just had the same problem, only my autofocus completely crapped out when I was trying to figure out the problem. Luckily my camera had a month left on the warranty. Got and email saying "SUB-MIRROR IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY", sounds like exactly your problem, so take heart, you are not the only one having this problem. Hope it doesn't cost too much. steve_dunn2
The sub-mirror is used on all EOS autofocus bodies, film and digital, and its purpose is to direct light into the AF system, which is housed in the bottom of the mirror box. So that's why the state of this mirror affects AF.

I don't recall having heard of this problem before, and since all EOS bodies use a sub-mirror assembly, there are millions of 'em out there which apparently work properly. So I'd have to say it's an uncommon problem.

Hopefully it won't cost you too much to get it fixed. Good luck!
