Why do my images blur when I use the red eye function on my camera?

Recommended Posts

Tom,

what camera do you use? Can you post an example with exif-data intact?

Eventually, when switching the "reduce red eyes" function on, the camera might also switch to fill-flash. In that case the camera would try to use a considerable amount of ambient light (by using a longer exposure time). This might cause the blur as well, and could eventually be see in the exif-data. (As well, this should be in the cameras manual.)

Red eye reduction usually uses several pre-flashes with the aim of closing the subject's irises, thus reducing the area available for reflection from their retinas. This however means a considerable delay between pressing the shutter and taking the photograph. Be sure to hold the camera steady until the shot has been taken. If you move the camera during the exposure and there is sufficient ambient light to register on the film (or sensor) you may end up with a ghostly smudge around the main image.

Tom , there is camera movement in the photo. The drapes behind the women show movement that is horizontal. The Flash over rode the movement and made what was dark sharp.I would suggest using a faster shutter speed, but more important hold the camera still during the exposure.
