mark_tucker2
Can anyone tell me if there is a chart somewhere for determining coverage for old classic lenses? I'm about to buy a Schneider Xenotar 150 2.8, (which everyone seems to agree covers 4x5), but I have also found a Xenotar 105 2.8 as well. I can find nothing on the web about this lens. My question is: will it cover 4x5? Thank you. Mark Tucker, http://www.marktucker.com
michael_briggs2
You can find information on virtually all Schneider lenses on Schneider's website http://www.schneideroptics.com/. Obviously the current lenses are there, but many older lenses are also described: Info -- Vintage Lens Data, then either Small or Large Format. Schneider lists the 150 mm Xenotar as covering 160 mm (http://www.schneideroptics.com/info/vintage_lens_data/large_format_lenses/xenotar/data/2,8-150mm.html), so just barely covering 4x5. The purpose of this lens was speed, not coverage. Obviously a shorter version isn't going to cover 4x5. They don't have the 105 mm, but they have info for the 100 mm focal length, which is close enough: coverage of 117 mm diameter (http://www.schneideroptics.com/info/vintage_lens_data/large_format_lenses/xenotar/data/2,8-100mm.html). michael_briggs2
Using google to search photo.net via "site:photo.net xenotar coverage" turns up a bunch of relevant threads, for example: "schneider kreuznach xenotar 100/2.8 lens" at http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00L7iL "Use of Schneider f2.8/150 Xenotar lens" at http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00LJX7

mark_tucker2
Thank you all, very much. I'm so out of touch with 4x5, having (unforgivably) selling my Ebony and other great film cameras when the Digital Wave swept me under, and affected my judgement. A further embarrassing question: What is the minimum coverage number for 4x5? Weirdly, I have a photo of a Schneider 105 f2.8 for sale, but my hunch is that it's for 6x9, and that's why I can't find much reference for it under LF. Again, thank you all. jim_galli4
Hi Mark. 4X5 needs 165mm or so. The 105 won't cover. It's a 6X9 lens. The 150 would cover with about the same movements or slightly less than a 150 tessar type. Schneider's 160 number is probably a little conservative. profhlynnjones
Email me and I'll give you some information regarding used LF lenses and also if you ask, I'll send some general information on numerous lenses most of which are appropriate to LF.
