Dr. Mandler came from Ernst Leitz in

Wetzlar Germany in the early Fifties. His

contract was for a few years only but he

loved Canada and came to an agreement

with Leitz that he could stay on in Midland,

still acting as Leica's top optical designer

for many years. Most famous Leica lenses

of the Sixties into the Eighties were

computed by Dr. Mandler (Noctilux, Apo-

Telyt and many of the Summicrons). He

was well known and respected by optical

designers throughout the world.

Sad loss. One of the all-time masters. We have Walter to thank for some of the best Leitz

lenses ever designed. Such as the 35/2.0 8 element summicron and famous 35/1.4

summilux conceived by him. Fast, compact, incredibly well-built beautiful lenses. some of

my all-time favourite lenses. He will not be forgotten anytime soon.

I'm not big on Leica's commemorative editions but Mandler deserves one, in fact IMO it should've come in his lifetime. He's the one most responsible for keeping Leica on the map the last time it faced extinction. They could use another Mandler right now.

Walter Mandler was one of my heroes. The 35 1.4 design as well as the Noctilux are legends. I admired his dedication and vision in bringing these optical designs to life. If anyone has a list of US patent numbers that are connected to him, I would love to find out. Especially pre 1975 patents are of interest to me.
