f._timothy_knapik
Hello. I am just beginning to get into digital photography. When Ihave my film developed, I have the images put on a CD. I was given anolder computer with Photoshop 5.5 on it. I know that this is an olderversion of Photoshop but will it be sufficient enough for now as Istart to learn post digital capture "darkroom" applications? Or shouldI purchase something like Photoshop Elements 3? Thank you. Francis
randrew1
I started with Photoshop v3.04 and upgraded to v5.5. I'm still using it because I'm too cheap to upgrade again. (Also, my iMac can't handle Photoshop CS.) Version 5.5 has everything you need to get started. I'd suggest sticking with it until you can identify the additional features you want. kelly_flanigan1
Here I started with Photostyler; the went to Photoshop when it came out on the PC with version 2.5 . My first legal copy was 3.0 . Today I run PS 3 , 4, 5.5, 7.0 and CS plus Elements 2.0; and LT 4 and 5. Photoshop 5.5 I still use alot. It has a huge depth to it; it has modern color stuff; batch processing; etc. Photoshop 7.0 has a browser; CS has a better browser; and raw support for cameras; and full 16bit controlss. Photoshop 5.5 is a powerfull program; and a decent program still today.
hudef_ukk
Timothy, why do you still use 5.5 when you have CS?
hudef_ukk
sorry, I meant to address Kelly
kelly_flanigan1
Hudef Ukk; CS doesnt open some weird TIFF formats that older versions of Photoshop support. There are many hundreds of file format variants; in TIFF alone there are hundreds of dialects. Older PS versions support dialects that Adobe has chosen to abandon. lotsawa
I would start with PS 5.5. That's still a great program, though I would miss the shadow/highlight feature a bit (and the RAW converter in case you'll get a digital camera that can shoot in RAW format). f._timothy_knapik
Thank you everyone for the answers. I think I will look for a Photoshop 5.5 book and try to learn how to use Photoshop. Tim
