scan elite 5400 & APS

Recommended Posts

I recently bought a Minolta Scan Elite 5400. I have a huge batch of

negatives to get through and am having a ball doing so. Prior to

purchasing I read reviews, forums and came to my decision to by this

given it's performance. Now I have APS film to scan as well - and I

was adamant that the 5400 could not scan APS out of the box - but

that you could buy an adaptor to enable scanning of APS film. When

purchasing the scanner I even enquired to the price of such an

attachment, and was quoted aprice for it...

Now as I searched the internet to see if I could score one second

hand, I am now reading that the 5400 in fact is not capable of

scanning APS film....

Does anyone know - can it scan APS - I know there is no drop down in

the scanning software for APS, but I thought maybe the other

software you could buy might allow this - or maybe the software

might be smart enought to know the adaptor has been plugged in and

then give you the APS option in the drop down ?

I hope someone out there knows the answer to this.

Thanks,

Jason

I'm afraid its 35mm only. No Konica Minolta APS holder for this model and I haven't been able to find a third party one. The cheaper Minolta Scan Dual models can do APS with an optional adapter. If you check Minolta's "interactive Q&A" for the 5400, you'll see:

"Question: Does this model support APS films?

Answer: No, it does not."

I haven't done it but was told that you can. You have to remove the aps film from the cartridge and scan it like negative film or put your frame in a slide mount. I don't know if you can get your film back in the cartridge. My advise would be to save yourself the hassle and bring the film to a shop to scan for you. Good luck, and if you find a good method to scan aps please post it (I'd be curious).

Yes you can scan APS in a 5400 if you pull the film out and position it in the holder. Its a lot of messing about through and only rearly suitable if you have a couple of single frames to scan.

I would love to see some enterprising person produce a APS film holder and for edHamrick's VueScan to support it.

Its the same story for the Hassaleblad XPAN. Wouldn't it be nice if the 5400 could be adapted to scan XPAN stuff too. Apparently this will never happen due to the stepper motor not being capable of moving so far but I don't see that this woudl be an issue with an APS adaptor.
