saddleboy
Can anyone tell me if Canon Digital rebels are suited for infrared photography. I've seen a lot of IR photo lately and would like to give it a try myself. Before i go out and buy filters i would like to know if good results are achieveable with my rebel. Advices and tips are welcome. Many thanks, Pascal
eric bond
Not without modifying the filter in front of the sensor. See the following website for a tutorial. http://ghonis2.ho8.com/rebelmodnew.html Eric
jeffdietz
IR will work on a Digital Rebel. My first shots were with a Tiffen 87 which turned out to be the wrong filter for what I wanted to achieve (too dark). I returned it and am awaiting a Hoya R72, which is supposed to work better. I posted a thread on this myself. See http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00Aaw7 -- Jeff

Eric, thanks for the link, i may use this site in the future but right now, i'm not ready to do this kind of modification to my camera. Jeff, thanks for the link to your past tread, very helpfull. timarmes
Hi Pascal, I bought a Cokin P filer system with a Cokin infra red filter (equivalent to the Hoya 72). This all worked out about the same price as the H72 while having the added benefit that I can use it on different sized lenses. I have not modified my 300D. This means that a typical IR exposure takes about 10 seconds in decent daylight, effectively limiting your choice of scenes to very still ones on windless days. Desite this, I'm very happy with the results. Read this: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=31970 Tim
ktuncay
Digital rebel can take descent IR pictures. Here are some samples: http://www.photo.net/photo/3012528 http://mypage.iu.edu/~ktuncay/Pics/photos/2004_1114_171200AA.html http://mypage.iu.edu/~ktuncay/Pics/photos/2004_1106_100916AA_3.html http://mypage.iu.edu/~ktuncay/Pics/photos/2004_1218_142038AA.html I use Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 with Hoya R72 on a tripod with a cable switch. Canon lenses seem to result in a bright spot in the center due to their coating. Typically, on a sunny day, you need something like f5.6, 6 secs, ISO 400. The images don't need to much editing. I simply desaturate it with PS and then adjust the contrast. I will test it with the 20D once sun shows up again.
