daniel_iggers
Do the first two digits in the serial number on an Industar Jupiter-3 lens indicate the year of manufacture? the serial number on mine is N6206036, and if the first two digits indicate the year, this would have been manufactured in 1962. Does anyone know?
lesged
Daniel, I'm guessing yes, because it was the rule for s/n on FSU cameras. However, my Jupiter-12 with Kiev/Contax mount is N9009195 and I question whether they made J-12s into the 90s. I'm sure someone who has the straight scoop can help both of us to learn about the serial numbers of FSU lenses that start with N.
veronica_lodge
Da Yupiter-3 has serials that mean the year.. Two digits are the year of build. The factory mark also shown on barrel. ZOMZ in Zagorsk and the "shihkabbb logo factory" ZOMZ is da Zagorsk Optick Mechanical Factory. Thread ist 40,5mm fur filter. Lens is like Sonnar; carl zeiss 5cm F1.5. cheers V.L

winfried_buechsenschuetz1
"Daniel, I'm guessing yes, because it was the rule for s/n on FSU cameras." True in most cases, but not in case of the FED1 cameras. Their serial numbers start with low values (the lowest I have seen was around s/n 1400) and go up to 6 digits for late items. My FED1 has a 62xxxx s/n but it was made in the mid-50s.
Andrew in Austin
he KIEV and Zorki cameras pretty much stuck with the serial numbers indicating the year of manufacture. Most of the Jupiter line up did the same. Your Jupiter was most definitely made in 1962. FEDs and Industar lenses are a different kettle of fish. Only some of the FEDs used the Krasnogorski and Kiev numbering convention. Industar lenses had a variety of serial numbers, depending on where and what plant made the lens. Sandeha Lynch
Andrew - do you know a source of details for the Fed serial numbers? All I've found so far are a few sites that give an occasional example number with a given body.
ejstark
2 Sandeha Lynch See here FED production numbers from Fedka.com Good luck :-)
Sandeha Lynch
Erick - many thanks. The funny thing is that I recently recommended the same page to someone else, but then it was pointed out to me that it only refers to the Leica II Copy, and of course stops at 1955.
Two sites I've found are RussianPlaza which itemises the types and varieties quite well (mine appears to be a Fed 2C Type 2A) and LensWerks which gives some sample numbers. richard_p
Veronica, A very nice collection. I'm in a process of getting multiple jupiter 3's for kiev mount. So far, I have two. One of them is still in Moscow. Richard
paul s
You really can't reliably date a Fed lens from the serial number like a Kiev or a Zorki. I have an Industar 26m which was clearly made in the late 1950's or 1960's. It's SN starts with "17..." -Paul Shinkawa
