charles_sieracki1
Was wondering if anyone had been to Vancouver Island in July. Is it crowded and are there plenty of good places to shoot? Where can I escape the crowds? What's the weather like up there? Thanks for the help.
mendel_leisk
Out of the way, but if you can, get over to the west coast, Ucuelet/Tofino area. Completely different over there.
demetri
I live in Victoria, in mid summer the weather will typically be anywhere from 25-32C or so.. pretty comforatble and cooler when youre near the water. The tourist season can make downtown attractions like the parliament buildings/inner harbour fairly busy, but I never find it too packed. I dont know what you are looking to shoot, or where on the island you will be, let me know and I will try to give more specific advice. Wildlife (no shortage of), architechture(not too great IMO)? If you get the chance, I completely agree with Mendel, if you get the chance try to go to Tofino/Long Beach. Its gorgeous and only about a 4 hour drive from Victoria
dominic_.
Cathedral Grove, near Port Alberni, it's an old growth forest. ...and another recommendation for the Tofino/Ucuelet area. The weather there is usually sunny in the summer as well as being windy and slightly cool (you're right next to the ocean). You can also expect to see fog some mornings. As for crowds, if you get up early you can escape the crowds just about anywhere, but by mid-day expect plenty of people (esp. on the beaches). qtluong
Here are some Pictures of the Vancouver Island. Pacific Rim is relatively uncrowded for a National Park.
Jerry_
Vancouver Island has great forests, great forests require lots of moisture: go prepared for rain. It high pressure greets your arrival, you are in luck -- but if the great forests are getting great precip, go prepared for rain.
christopher perez
... if you're more inclined toward people photography, it fun to wander around the harbor. Plenty of wonderful images for the taking. [i'm going to butcher the spelling, sorry] If you like totem poles, Chamianas (ugh, I did, didn't I) is a fun place to wander around with a camera. But if you don't make it out of Victoria, the totem pole park next to the museum is wonderful.
larrybc
Northern Vancouver Island is beautiful and not nearly as crowded as the south end. Larry
charles_sieracki1
Thanks everyone for the advice. Anyone been to Strathcona Provincial Park? It looks very mountainous and could be a great place to hike if the coastal areas are crowded (although sounds not very likely).
pascal_b.
I was there in July and was not bothered by the crowds one bit.Agree with Tofino. It's quite out there, the sort of place that has a human dimension to it as well... which makes the stay fascinating... Also, not mentioned but absolutely amazing if you're into colours: Butchard gardens near Victoria. The most beautiful gardens in July... Pick an overcast day and make the trip... Also, if you have a few days and a bit of cash, get yourself to a wild life photo shoot. SlanP.
costaricaweddingphotograph
I live on Vancouver Island in the capital city (the densest population on the island) and I can assure you that you can be alone with nature at any given time. A 10 minute drive from my house takes you to some extremely pristine nature, old growth forests, etc., with tons of wildlife. I agree that Tofino and Ucluelet are amazing. Also worth mentioning is Strathcona National Park in the middle of the island. You don't have to go far to find a completely secluded beach and lots of room, even in heavy tourism season. We're pretty spoiled here I have to admit, so there is a lot of nature to go around. Lots of land compared to people. The only disappointing aspect of the island is the intense clear-cut logging in certain areas. You'll see this at various points along any of the roads. then, boom, you're back in nature again. I'm starting to put together a directory of the best places to photograph wildlife on Vancouver Island and area that you may find interesting - it may save you time (I wish I had somethign like this when I moved here): http://www.pbase.com/ccraft/vancouverisland You can see other shots of remote areas around Victoria here: http://www.pbase.com/ccraft/victoria_ and http://www.pbase.com/ccraft/bc/ Cheers!
