andrew prokos
Hi there, i just purchased a Fujinon 180 5.6 W lens. I am wondering if this is the new or older series of Fujinon lenses. The newer lenses are designated CM-W. This lens has the lettering on the outside of the barrell, has a 67mm filter thread, and a new copal 1 shutter. I can't really tell if it's single or multi coated though. From what I have read the older W lenses have lettering on the inside and have 58mm filter threads. Do Fujinon CM-W lenses just say "W"? michael_briggs2
The Fuji CMW lenses have "CM Fujinon W" on the outside of the barrel, so your lens is an older plain W version. The position of the lettering correlates with whether the lens is single or multicoated: lettering inside the barrel on the ring around the front glass was used by Fuji when the lenses were single coated, while for multicoated lenses Fuji placed the lettering on the outside cylinder of the barrel. So you lens should be multicoated and is of intermediate vintage (single coated would be older, CM-W would be newer).

The plain W 180 mm Fuji-W that I have with the lettering on the outside of the barrel is defintely multicoated. However, the filter size is 62 mm. Are you sure about 67 mm?

The best website on Fuji LF lenses is Kerry Thalmann's: http://www.thalmann.com/largeformat/fujinon.htm. His brochure page at http://www.thalmann.com/largeformat/brochure.htm, has a 1981 brochure that includes the multicoated W's, and a newer brochure with the CM-W lenses.

P.S. The Fuji that you have is a very fine lens and I wouldn't be concerned about it not being the very latest version.
andrew prokos
thanks for the response...this definitely has a 67mm thread, not 62mm. It doesn't say CM-W, just W. Could this be some transitional lens? Were there any major design changes between the two?
