andrew robertson
I hate to tear into a whole nation of people like this, but most (not all) Japanese photographs evoke a very textbook quality. It's as if they want to show you how a photograph should look, without actually imparting any emotion or feeling. A 'demo' if you will. Let the flames BEGIN! mike dixon
Not a flame, but some relevant questions: Have you, in fact, looked at most photos by Japanese photographers? Or is it more accurate to say that most of the work by Japanese photographers that you have looked at didn't evoke any feeling from you? And, if that's the case, what's the range of work that you've looked at? I agree that I've seen some pretty lame images posted as demonstrations of this or that lens' "quality," but I think that's more a result of "camera geekness" than of nationality. I know I've seen plenty of work by Japanese photographers that was very evocative and powerful.

brien_m
Grant- Les was providing a helpful link for a fair number of people interested in the lens and who would like to get an initial impression of it because it (well, the MC version) isn't available outside of Japan yet. al_kaplan1
Brien, go easy on Grant! It's no easy task to produce dozens of posts a day (except, it seems, Thanksgiving day)on multiple forums and absolutely never write anything informative, positive, or of particular interest to anybody. joel_matherson
The bokeh doesnt look that bad to me on some of these photos, and the 40 f1.4 seems capable or sharp shots wide open but I think these shots were all taken on an RD-1 with a crop factor so im still hoping to see some results with film using it as an actual 40mm wide lens. les_lammers
Joel, I don't think these are shot with the RD-1. He has some pix of a fire truck too and they looked good enough to get me to order the lens. BTW, I think I read that the 40 Summicron is a single coated lens. I sure liked it when I had a CL years ago. I can take the heat guys, wearing asbestos underwear!

andrew robertson
Mike, obviously I haven't seen most Japanese photographs. There are many Japanese photographers whose work I enjoy, as well! Some of Hira's pictures are great, but some have the 'demo' quality that, as you posited, may come from the camera geekiness that's rife over there. Many of the Japanese photos I have seen, while technically proficient, evoke this feeling in me. I'm not Japanese, and there may be some qualities in them that are only apparent if you are Japanese. As a student of the language and culture of Japan, I know that there are many things about Japan that I may not understand in my lifetime. It wasn't meant as an attack. Just calling them as I see them.
masatoshi_yamamoto
I gotta say that working Japanese PHOTOGRAPHERS (as opposed to equipment wankers, which this guy with his Nokton clearly is) show more creativity and daring than I see in a lot of work from other countries. I'm referring particularly to a lot of the editorial sutff, where I see Japanese photographers taking chances, and editors printing pictures that would never make it in an American magazine. How many Annie Liebowitz clones are out there? A lot. How many album covers have you seen with the formula of "band looks scruffy, half of band looks at the lens, half look disinterestedly away"? Too many. Safe, teachnically well-done, and all been seen before. Even Japanese porn can be suprisingly creative. When was the last time you saw a Playboy centerfold shot with a fisheye lens to make the boobs look huge? Not that they aren't already, but you know what I mean. It's a nice effect. Try it some time. But yes, this guy with his Nokton is an awful photographer. Probably gets hard just uttering words like "single-caoted...ooooh..."
red_buckner
Japanese photographers produce the best glamour images of women that I've ever seen. You'd think this kind of photography is worked out, but the Japanese keep coming up with new angles on it--sometimes literally! Their use of color and their composition in these shots is sometimes amazing, and usually strikingly good. And I agree: their porn is sometimes creative and strong.
