terry_scott
The British pronounce it "Nikkon".
wind.dk
To my knowledge (which isn't much yet) the Japanese would pronounce it nee-koh-nn, with equal stress on all three syllables... In Denmark it's pronounced Nee-konn just the same as Nike - Nee-keh (the exception for the latter being when we're discussing running shoes rather than greek goddesses, but why would anyone want to do that). david_h._hartman
The name Nikon is not Japanese. It was made up for foreign markets and as Pierre Lachaine points out it is suspiciously similar to Zeiss-Ikon. Yes, just add an N to Ikon and you have Nikon. There was even a dispute over the name in Germany and there are Nikkor F cameras floating around as a result. The name was clearly supposed to sound German for marketing purposes.

If you own a stereo receiver made by "Pioneer" are you going to strain to pronounce this English word with strong association to the United States 19th century history as a Japanese word just because the company that made the reciver is a Japanese company? terry_scott
I am reminded that (for the Japanese market?) Nikkormats were Nikomats. A few got around, of course, and there is a camera shop ten miles away that has one in his secondhand window.
trevor_quested
We say "nick on" in Australia but geez mates can you really believe anything an Aussie tells you?
gerard_owmby
If you go to the Nikon website you can watch video instruction for the new D300 where the narrator pronounces it "nee-kon". These tutorials are made by Nikon. Is Nikon trying to get everyone to pronounce it this way?
marcogarrone
@ Reynaldo: actually, since Nike brand name comes after the greek goddess of victory Νίκη (pron. nee-kay), I reckon it should not be pronounced "Naik", LOL
court_gettel1
Well, there's a definitive answer. A whole lot of them.
