leica ron
Do you 'really' have to get written permission to shoot photographs in the Tate Modern ? I want to take photos of the Turbine Hall and the 'Sun' ... Anyone been there recently ?
marcus_stensmyr
Been there half a year ago. I took heaps of photos of the "sun"...no one asked me for any permission. Go ahead, worst they can do is throw you out.
leica ron
Thanks Marcus, what lenses did you use ? I bought my 35/50/90 combo with a pair of M6 bodies from across the Atlantic.

leica ron
Bugger !!I thought it was part of the permanent collection ! I was here in London for a few days in February and chose the Photographer's Gallery instead of the Tate Modern ... Oh well, I'll have to find something else to shoot over the next two weeks. Thanks for the responses and fabulous images ...
john_spiers
My favourite photographic exhibition at Tate Modern - don't know who it's by, but it's nine photos. In the first photo, it's a chap standing on some grass. He then gradually disappears into a deepening hole in the ground until by photo number nine you can't see him at all. I had a hard time keeping a straight face at some of the "art" in Tate Modern, and I'm afraid I was laughing at this one. John
donald_ingram1
It's a shame it's closed - I think the replacement is a visual non event, loud speakers spaced throughout the vast hall. I almost got thrown out by security for using a mono-pod on my roundshot. I wish I had taken my M6 to get a few silhouetted shots as well ... it's too late now.<div></div>
furcafe
When I was there a couple years ago, 1 of the docents yelled @ me to put my "Leica" (actually a Contax IIa) away.<div></div>

chiswick_john
When it first opened I got told off when I treid to take a picture in a gallery space with my GR1s - a suspect over time they have had to change their policy as so many tourists were bringing their cameras in and expecting to be able to use them? jorn ake
Go to the Tate anyway. There is a great Robert Frank exhibit there.
peter_evans4
Things may have changed since I was last there, but as I recall there is (was) a clear distinction between (a) the turbine hall and (b) everywhere else. I didn't note what was written about pods or flashes (since I had neither), but photography was in principle allowed in the turbine hall and wasn't allowed elsewhere. paul t
This is all about copyright. If you took a picture of, say, a Jackson Pollock painting, you'd be infringing the copyright of the Pollock/'Krasner estate. The Tate own his paintings - but they don't own the copyright of them, which is retained by the artist. That's why they're so restrictive, and will allow photos in the Turbine Hall, but not anywhere with paintings etc. I've tried arranging shoots in there, and hit problesm for exactly that reason. If you get the permission of the artist concerned you'll be ok. I N the turbine hall, etx, there aren't the same copyright issues; taking a photo of the 'sun' doesn't reproduce a 'significant' part of the work, which is the main criterion for copyright infringement.
