robert_burkert
I'm wondering if there is a setup procedure required for using the Wein Peanut slave (PN) with an electronic flash and a digital camera. As some digital cameras emit more than one preflash prior to the main flash how does the slave unit determine when to fire?
picturesque
A regular Peanut slave will fire with the pre-flash. Wein makes digital versions of the Peanut and other models. These ignore the pre-flash and fire with the real flash.
skipd
The Wein Digital Peanut fires on the SECOND flash that it sees, not the first. If you have a camera that emits more than one "pre" flash, you cannot use the Digital Peanut to trigger another synchronized flash. There is nothing to set up with the Digital Peanut except plugging it into the slave flash and making sure it can see the primary flash. Something to be cautious of: If you are using the on-camera flash as the trigger for a slave, you may not be able to get the correct exposure when using the slave. Since the camera can not control the slave flash to adjust the exposure, you MUST have a camera that can be placed into fully manual exposure mode when using the flash. gregory_roush
I think the issue only arises if you want to use the pop-up flash for the trigger. I use two automatic Vivitars, one as trigger and the other with the peanut slave. They don't fire the pre-flash.
steve_hovland
On my Canon A70 the manual mode does not have a preflash, so all my conventional slaves work just fine. The other modes have a pre-flash and they don't work correctly. The multiple pre-flash makes me think of red-eye reduction, which would also cause problems with digital slaves.
