larry_menzin
I just got a 553ELX with the WLF and wanted to use some sort of prism with it. I purchased a PME prism from MPEX and am somewhat disappointed with it. The loss of brightness and contrast seem significant, where it feels much more difficult to focus than with the WLF. Questions: Could I have a bad prism optically, or is this typical with the PME? Would I be better off with an RM2 and using a hand meter for maximum brightness and contrast. Are the pricey prisms (PME45, etc.) that much better from a viewing point of view? What am I missing here? Larry
walter_batla
My PME45 works quite well. I see no loss of brightness when using it. However, it is often desirable to use a hand held spot meter for correct exposure.
Ed_Ingold
It's hard to imagine a prism finder dimmer than a WLF. I have a non-metered PM51, 45 degree prism. If you don't have an Acute-Matte screen, its definitely an improvement. It's also required for PME prisms. The PM51 has 3x magnification, a definite plus over the PME90(2x) and PME45 (2.5x). I feel comfortable using an hand-held spotmeter (Sekonic 508) and making manual corrections for polarizers and extension tubes. I may yet get a PME45 for the convenience.
