Tamron 24-135 vs. 18-70 AF-S

Currenty I'm using an N80 with Tamron 24-135 and Nikkor 50 f1.8 AF-D

and pleased with each of my lenses. No need to talk about the 50 and

also tamron is quite pleasing at around f/8. My question is; I have

a limited budget. Should I trade in the Tamron for the kit 18-70

lens ? Is the kit lens better than my Tamron in terms of sharpness,

contrast and flare? I know that the kit lens is quite wider at the

low end. But maybe I can live without that for some time. (maybe

until getting an 18-35 f3.5-4.5) If Tamron stays it will be quite

long (~200mm) with the crop factor and I may never need anything

longer again. At the other side 36mm seems a bit "normal". You see

I'm confused.

You don't have to have a D70 to get the 18-70 DX kit lens. That lens also works fine on all other Nikon DSLRs such as the D100 and anything from the D1 or D2 family, plus the Fuji S2 and the up-coming S3.

I would say the 18-70 DX matches the D70 better. If you keep using the Tamron 24-135, you'll have only a very moderate wide angle. Only you can decide whether that is sufficient for you or not. However, are you keeping the N80? If so, the kit lens will not really work on the film body as it will vignet in its entire zoom range and you'll need separate lenses for your two bodies.
