Delay when pressing the capture button

I just got a new Nikon Coolpix 5700. Like all digital cameras, you

first press the capture button halfway to compose the picture and then

all the way to capture. The problem is that there is a delay from the

moment I fully press the button to the moment the camera responds to

start capturing the image (I am not talking about the time during

which the aperture remains open) I noticed that this delay is really

noticable in darker areas or when the battery is nearly empty. Could

someone please explain why this happens and how I can minimize the

delay?

thanks

The likely culprits are autofocus adjustments and exposure metering decisions.

Well, fresh batteries and decent ambient light will help, as you have discovered by way of the converse.

Be well,

Ok, I think I solved the problem by disabling "continuous focus". Now the camera's response is acceptable, but I have another problem: I cannot get sharp macros. The subject appears to be perfectly focused in the viewfinder before shutter release, but not so perfect after shutter release. Perhaps this is not a fault of the camera, but something that can be fixed with a tripod because of the nature of macro photography? Thanks.
