Need the easiest way to feed digital pics to my PC

This weekend my husband and I are shooting Santa photos with your

pet for a local humane society. While I am completely comfortable

taking the shots and have worked out and practiced with the lighting

and backdrop, I'm getting pressure about being able to view the pics

that day. I am shooting with my D70 (high res JPG's) and will be

able to do some screening of shots as I go, but many of the

potential clients are asking to view the pics that day as they are

taken. If I can get a fast and easy - and hopefully inexpensive -

way to feed the pics to my pc directly from my camera, that would be

ideal. What kind of set-up would I need? What software, cables,

etc? Is it possible/feasible that as I take a shot, it appears on a

computer screen not far from me? I have a spare Compaq PC with

Windows 98 that I could bring to the event and use for this

purpose.

I also need to think about how the D70 will handle this as when I

hook up the USB cord to the camera it goes into PC mode and

transfers the pics to Nikon Picture Project. I'm not sure the

camera would allow me to take pics while the USB cord is connected.

(You can tell I don't have my manual here with me right now, but I

know many of you use the D70 and may know this answer as well.) Is

there another way to make this happen?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Someone else may be of better help. I haven't used it yet, plan to, but can't you plug from the USB port from your camera directly into a capable printer? Some printers have small screens for viewing. I'm going to update my printer soon as my digital cameras have this feature. Another thought for instant viewing is to use the video out into a projector or TV to instantly view them and still used the cards to record the information.

Thought this may help.

Cables are a disaster waiting to happen, so even if it were possible to connect your camera to a computer by cable, you'd be risking some kind of catastrophe. If I were you I would station an assistant by the computer, and switch out CF cards with each changing of the pet (assuming you have at least two cards). Then your assistant can show pictures from the previous take while you shoot the current take without interruption or worry. The only thing you would need is a $20 USB CF card reader.<p>Actually I would probably just show the client pictures on the back of the camera, because a) they would be directly behind me assisting me in getting their pets' attention anyway, and b) the D70 has a fairly nice LCD with zoom function.

Plug the camera into the PC like you were going to DL the pictures, then launch Nikon Capture. Make sure you DL the latest version from nikonusa.com. From that program, you can set ALL The settings on the camera, and shoot from the keyboard (cam on tripod ETC). The images go strait to the PC, and bipass the camera altogether. Just make sure you keep the tripod/cam close to the table/pc so you dont have any accidents.

WHy do it the HARD way? Get a CARD reader for your laptop. there are many available. If you like, you could get a firewire adapter for your PC and then, get a firewire card reader. There are many advantages to doing it this way:

1) you can keep shooting while the pix transfer to the PC

2) you will save camera power for your shoot, instead of transfer.

3) it's much, much faster and easier.

4) it will work on ANY computer.
