donald_kim_lewiston
Hello, I took about 120 pictures over the weekend and noticed that on 3 pictures, a strange bright green diamond/dot appeared on the picture. It appeared on the LCD and on my computer after I transfered them. The only common thing about the pics is that their was a bright light coming directly into the lens, sun for 2 and the moon for 1. Has anyone had this happen. I also noticed a thin line (thinner than the grid lines) that starts on the inside left curve of the center spot meter and it extends straight down. It is visible when I have the grid on or off. I've never noticed it before but it may have always been there. It does not affect my final picture in any way though. Thanks for any info. patrick smith
1. That is what is, I believe, called flare. It will happen when you point your lens at a bright light source. 2. Nikon says that the small thin line is a product of the Vari-Brite screen when it has its gridlines activated and it isn't to be worried about. At least on the N80, it says that. I presume that applies for the D70.
vivek iyer
I have not seen this happen. Cool pictures though. Perfect for Enquirer?! Vivek.
Karim Ghantous
It may be flare but it doesn't look like it to me. It may be something to do with the CCD but then if that's the case then why don't we see it more often? Time to call in Sculley and Mulder. ;-)
patrick smith
There could be a large particle on your CCD, which might cause the light to do that as it passes around it. It might be ghosting. To me, it looks like a lens issue.
brandonhamilton
Lens flare wouldn't consistently be green. They are usually yellow/orange or a combonation somewhere around there. I have no clue what that is, but it appears to be somehow RELATED to direct sunlight, something LIKE lens flare. Does it happen with all your lenses? or just 1? Might want to test the same type of shots, with a different lens.
kenneth_logan
My guess is that this is a lens flare issue. You could probably see the problem in the viewfinder prior to taking the picture. My rough guess is that if you don't see the problem in the viewfinder prior to taking the picture, the problem is more likely to be a problem with the CCD's rendering of what you see in the viewfinder. donald_kim_lewiston
Both shots were with the Nikon 24mm lens. I also had a polarizer on, so it could very well be flare. I don't think it is a CCD problem since only 3 out of 100+ pictures ended up with the green dot. Thanks for all your input, I appreciate it. michael_kronmal2
I believe it may be an XBOX logo. Did Microsoft purchase Nikon when we were not looking? And I too discovered the annoying vertical hairline in the viewfinder. I am migrating from an F5 as my primary to the D70 and my eye keeps focusing on that hairline! peter_h1
Either that or the poor guy is eminating a green light from a rather dubious location on his person. I'm backing the Scully and Mulder scenario ....
john_carter_rhodes
Don't forget on a DSLR, you can get reflections off the sensor that bounce around back off the lens elements. Does anyone have experince of how these look? I seem to remember that this is something like it. John.
Jim_Tardio
This doesn't look like flare to me. You may have a sensor problem. Assuming your camera is new, send it to Nikon for evaluation.
I've taken thousands of shots with my D70, under most lighting conditions, and have never seen this. david_h._hartman
Id call it ghost. Ghost and flare good friends. Non-imageforming light that can degrade an image in many ways. Lightreflected off of film made its contribution but light reflectedoff of the sensor seems to make more problems. The color iseasily explained by the color of multi-coating on the lens. Ifyou look at the a multi-coated lens it shimmers with prettycolors, green and magenta and others. Super multi-coated lensesare less colorful and give less colorful ghosts. I would not beconcerned at all about a health of the sensor. The ghost in water/landscapephoto is quite typical.

Best,

Dave Hartman.
