Dave, asking this question, means that you should buy a inexpensive zoom and use them for a while. say like the very good 28-75 2.8 tamaron (about $300.00 dls).once you have them use them as much as you can,and check all the time which focu leght you use most of the time or if you use several of them most often (it will depend on the kind of photography you do most[sports, documentary, fashion, micro, etc]and what demands from you)then you are going to sturb for say just the 24mm 1.4 becuse you shoot 80% of the time in low light and in that focu leght or the 35mm1.4 or the 50mm1.4 or maybe low light is not your need all you need is a zoom tha can take pictures in diferent leghts at anygiven point, where you need to focus on your subjet instead of your equipment.

then you are ready to buy the speciiaxe expensive zooms or primes where you are going to be able to justify their price and exintence.

see when you ask which is better? we could say one or the other but either one could be the right choice or wrong choice, since you mihgt be in a situation where a zoom is necesary in order to get the job done or viceversa.

it is always a compromise since yes the 24mm 1.4 is better than the 24-70 2.8 in low light situations and the pictures are also a bit noticeable sharper but then you loose 53 focu leghts, and the versatility of having a single lens instead of 3 primes .

mmm ok I am going to shut up now. he
