1DSMKII

Canon has been getting all the attention during the past month on its 20D announcement and product launch. Why would they choose to steal their own show right now?

At full frame sensor size of 24x36mm, the 1Ds has no competitors. Why innovate when they don't have to? I can see it will benefit from the DIGIC II chip for better noise reduction and a faster shutter rate, say 5 ps like the 20D. But that could wait until Photokina.

Seriously considering buying a used 1Ds after the M2 comes out.
Will watch the market prices here in Japan and see what happens. (Made the mistake of picking up my EOS 3 the other day... Now the D60 viewfinder feels VERY cramped...)
Because that's what innovators do.

Consider the fact that the 20D has ~ 100 fewer parts than the 10D. The normal evolution of electronic circuitry is towards increasing integration (a prime example is the cellular telephone). Fewer parts translates directly to lower component and manufacturing costs, in addition to more reliable products that require fewer post-purchase repairs.

Canon could certainly rest on its laurels with respect to the 1Ds, but competition is not the only reason to innovate. If the rumors are true that their profit margins are very low on the 1Ds, they might well be motivated to release a newer version for no other reason than to reduce production costs.
