john_caruana
Has anyone managed to get their Epson Perfection 2450 to work via the Firewire under Windows 98 SE? The PCI card I installed in my PC is recognised by my system but will not work with the scanner. Epson tell me that the only way round this is to upgrade the operating system! The scanner works fine on the USB...any experience of this problem and a way around, other than the system upgrade? Thanks
godfrey
Support for FireWire in Win98SE is simply poor. You'll be better off to upgrade to a later version of Windows for proper operation of FireWire devices. My friend who is a Windows system administrator for a large company confirmed this for me (I don't use Windows myself...). Godfrey
ernie_fosse
Actually, USB2 is faster than Firewire, works extremely well with Windows, and is recommended by Epson for the 2450. Ernie
cowan stark
You can't use Firewire with the 2450 using Windows 98SE. I tried it too, and it didn't work, although it works fine with my Sony DV camcorder. Here's an exerpt from Epson's FAQ's for the 2450. I don't know about Windows XP though. "Q: What are the minimum system requirements for Windows? A: These are the minimum system requirements. For optimum performance, a faster processor and more memory are recommended. Scanning at higher resolutions may create very large files that can exceed system requirements. - An IBM® compatible PC with a Pentium® or higher processor - For USB: Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Me, or Windows 2000 Professional; operating system must not be an upgrade from Windows 95 For IEEE 1394: Microsoft Windows Me or Windows 2000 Professional; operating system must be pre-installed." You might be better off putting in a USB 2.0 card if you don't want to change the OS.
ernie_fosse
Just for example: I use Windows XP Pro on a Compaq Presario with Celeron Processor (700Mhz), 512 MB RAM, and lots of hard drive space divided into 3 partitions (one of which is just for data). To this I added the USB 2.0 card (about $70) which makes my Epson 2450 respond extremely well, even when creating very large files. I also changed a path setting in Photoshop to move their working (i.e. temp) files to my data partition with lots of space (their default is on the C: drive). john_caruana
Thank you all for your responses I will not waste any more time on the Firewire connection to the Epson 2450 until I upgrade the system. Thanks John Caruana
