RZ Screen Issue

I just brought an RZ , It came with a plain mat screen, it`s ok ish

with the 110 2.8 but a bit of a struggle with the 50mm. Now I was

going to order a split image screen which is what I`m used to and

find the split image helps a lot but I noticed a post that mentioned

Bill Maxwell and his Hi-Lux screens. I E mailed him but he doesn`t do

a split image screen but speaks very highly of his Hi-Lux mat screen

but left the final decision to me.

Has anybody had any Experience of one of theses screen on an RZ( or

any other camera come to that?)and would you think that I would kick

my self for not getting the Mamiya split image screen?

The Mamiya screen is about £50 and the Maxwell is $200 which works

out to be twice the price which I don`t mind spending if it as good

as it sounds.

Thanks for any help that you can offer.

I have the Mamiya split image screen, and found the plain matt screen easier to focus with. Your're going to struggle with all the lenses other than the 100 because they are all 4.5 and significantly darker. It really is a matter of personal preference & practice, the split sits in my bag unused. I photograph people, and found lining up the split image too slow, but if you shoot " things" where time is not an issue, the split will work well for you.

Hi David,

I have two RZ ProII bodies, and I like the Maxwell screens so much I bought one for each camera.

I have the Brilliant Matte screens, I don't know if that's the same thing you're referring to or not, but they are wonderful. Bright, contrasty, much easier to focus than the standard Mamiya screen, especially with wide and tele lenses.

I am a people shooter, but I got mine with grids because I do a lot of work shooting to layouts where type will be dropped in, etc.

They also had no effect on my in-camera metering from the AE prism, i.e. no exposure compensation necessary.

Bill Maxwell really knows his stuff, and I highly recommend his screens...you won't be disappointed.

These screens make my RZ's the easiest MF cameras to focus I have ever used, including Hasselblad's Acute Matte.

Good luck.

Hello David,

I have a 45° split image w/grid Beattie Intensscreen for my RZ, and though I had to sell some blood to buy it, it was worth the effort.

Image is much more contrasty and easy to focus, especially with 50 and 360 that I use extensively. I fine tuned the AE metering finder as stated in the leaflet of the screen: it need a +1/3EV to compensate true higher transparency.

Greetings. Enrico

  • 3 weeks later...

>>>>>>Bill Maxwell's screens. Give him a call at

This was something I found in a Leica users group... dunno if

the number is still good. I think 404 area code is Northern

California area.. but don't qoute me on that.

I searched with Google and came up with plenty of threads from

various camera groups... lot's of people with good things to say

about his screens.. but no definitive contact info...

Maybe someone will post.

Oops! I was way off about the number being Northern CA,

Jared here is another post that mentions a contact # - although a

different one at that...

I noticed that the original poster of this thread mentions that he'd

e-mailed him... perhaps he could post.
