edk
Hi, I'm looking for some examples/comments on which website gallery tools are best. I have my own webspace, and would rather not sure something like Flickr.. Up until now, I've used 'Gallery 2' - but it give a rather complicated frontendfor visitors. Something along the lines of 'simpleviewer' would be better. So.. any tips/links? Thanks!
dave_osborne
I know what you mean about Gallery2. I use it for my website and spent most of the customisation effort stripping things out of it. It doesn't need to be as complicated as it tries to be by default. By editing the theme's photo.tpl & theme.tpl, and uninstalling unnecessary modules you can remove most things. And if you make all your albums accessable by the Guest userid you can remove all the user admin functions too. Before Gallery I used Jalbum for a static gallery which was good enough.. so if you don't need site searching or anything scripty then that might a good call. shanepinder
Hi Ed, Earlier this year, I started using the PhotoStore website gallery software. Prior to that I had a static html website but I found that it was taking me too long to update my site and add new pictures. I considered trying to build my own website using PHP and MySQL but decided that I just didn't have the time or patience to go that route. I came across the PhotoStore software while searching the web and decided to give it a try. I am happy with it so far. You can customize the appearance of the site if you are familiar with html coding. I found that their customer service was responsive. There are also forums on the developers website that provide assistance with customizing and so forth. The web address for the developer of the software is http://www.ktools.net/. You can have a look at my website at www.shanepinder.com. I hope this helps.
eugene_scherba
If you are serious, either code it yourself or pay a designer to do it. You will get much better results. The design of most freely-available galleries is a lesson on how not to do it.
edk
thanks for the feedback folks. I've been looking at SlideshowPro, and that looks pretty nice. In time, I may try and code something similar myself... but for now - looks good!
