Color shift when "Save for Web"

Recommended Posts

I've seen similar threads on this subject, but I am getting a slight color shift

to red when I "Save for Web". I shoot in RAW and use the Adobe RGB color space.

However, I do Convert to sRBG before saving for the web and I also embed the ICC

profile for sRGB. Attached is a screen shot of the a PS file in Adobe RGB

(left) and the same image in IE after converted and saved as sRGB (right). Does

anyone know why this is happening. I've read that IE (PC version) does not

honor embedded color profiles. When I open the sRGB jpg in PS, the colors look

fine.

You have to understand that your monitor is not exactly sRGB. sRGB

is simply the "best average" of many monitors. When viewing images

in Photoshop, this does not present a problem, because Photoshop

performs gamut conversion to your monitor gamut precisely. "Save for

Web" box, as well as internet browsers are not color managed, so you

get the color shift. There is nothing you can do about this.

First off I'm using a Macintosh but below applies to all web browsers.
Macintosh browsers are color managed, Windows are not. Safari assumes monitor profile

on untagged files. Explorer(Mac) - ColorSync must be checked in Preferences>

WebContent Use ColorSync.
I save my images with "Save for Web" and sRGB without a

profile because a there are some Window users in the photo world, less the half but still

some.. I check the image on two different Window machines and they look fine. I don't

know if Photoshop for windows has the feature but in the "Save for Web" window there is a

triangle in the upper right corner that when opened gives you four choices of how to save

your image, 'Uncompensated Color, Standard Windows Color, Standard Macintosh Color

and Use Document Color Profile'. Each one changes the color of the image some what.

Suggest that you play around with these, the Windows one is one I use for general web

posting.
