poulbh
My new(used) 420ex is blinking with red vertical lines coming from the left side (looking at the front) when its off the camera and the shoe, and in slave mode.Is this a defect or must it be placed in the shoe, which i don't have, to work off camera ? prinosphotography
That is normal when in slave mode to indicate that the flash is "awake" and monitoring for the master flash signals.
PuppyDigs
Yeah, that's a feature not a defect! Gives it kinda a Star Trek vibe. Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
poulbh
Will it be blinking all the time, or only because I didn't have a master on the same channel as the slave? thx
prinosphotography
"Will it be blinking all the time, or only because I didn't have a master on the same channel as the slave?" No, it has nothing do do with the channel. Blinking just means that slave mode is on.(as opposed to normal operartion)
digitmstr
Yes, it is an indication that the flash in working in slave mode. That way you can tell just by looking at the flash(es) from a distance which one is set to slave mode. Very useful actually. Personally, I would have preferred a Lava Lamp effect but, for now the blinking will do...
nelson cotrim
It blinks to let you know the flash is in slave mode, charged and ready to fire. If it's still recharging (not ready to fire) the light doesn't blink.
