Noise reduction software - a consensus?

While Neat Image is quite good, I prefer Noise Ninja. Here is a comparison of most the competing products in this arena (it's somewhat dated, but still a good read):

I use NeatImage for almost all my scans. With experience (such as knowing how much luminance noise reduction to use) it can do a nearly miraculous job of reducing film grain.

NeatImage, Noiseware and Noise Ninja are all good. Can't really go wrong with any of them.

I think all three mentioned here are outstanding products. It really depends on which side of the coin you get on a flip. I personally use Noise Ninja not because it is better, only because that's the one I had to pay the least for at the time. It works very very well. Even shooting at ISO 50 induces some low level of noice. NN removes them with amazing accuracy. Of course, you can't expect it to work straight out of the box, sort of speak. Each image is very different. Once you understand the settings, you can get the result you want with any of the three products.

 

My suggestion: see which one is on sale :)

Of course I have a peoblem 99% of you don't - I still havea WIN98 computer for 2 months - NOT WIN98SE, just WIN98. I suppose I should upgrade from Photoshop 3.0 also LOL. Actually I have Photoshop CS but no Computer to use in on - does not run on my WIN ME laptop.

I'm pretty sure that both NI and NN will work under Win98. Even if they won't plug-in to Photoshop 3, you can run them stand-alone and still get the benefit. Check out their websites for minimum requirements; you can download either of them to try before you buy, too.

Both will be sluggish on any hardware of Win98 vintage. For a PII 300, say, you can expect at least a 10 minute wait for a 3000x2000 shot.

Neat Image (NI) is great, but I also use Grain Surgery (GS). On some pictures, GS just appears to do a better job than NI of reducing grain without blurring the picture details. My first choice is NI - if it's not doing the job, then I use GS. Note that GS is about two to three times the cost of NI.

I always like to stay on the trailing edge of technology. Trip to St. John USVI early Feb and THEN new computer when I get back, IF I get back and IF I have any money left!

I might just add that I have used Neat Image to make the grain smoother in scanned black and white and color negatives, as well as using it for noisy 1600 iso digital images. Very versatile.
