philip_hartlieb
I got a strange message when i tried to open a converted RAW file (toTIFF) in PS elements 2.0. It tells me that the color (depth) of thefile is not compatible with PS. Any ideas? This should have beenincluded on my previous post. Sorry about that. maureen_m
Elements doesn't support 16-bit color depth. Convert the RAW file to 8-bit instead of 16-bit and you shouldn't have this problem.
Greg M
Same thing when I use my Canoscan FS4000US film scanner. I have the filmget program for the scanner loaded as a plug-in through Elements 2.0. When I scan at 42 bits the files have to be converted before I can view them in Elements.
www.philwinterphotography.
You might look for a copy of Photoshop LE. I understand it will handle 16 bit files. PSLE came bundled with various cameras and scanners a year or so ago. Otherwise, you'll need to convert to 8 bit files for PS Elements. michael_peters1
I *think* there are windows binaries of the GIMP available that handle 16-bit tiff, but while very good, GIMP is no photoshop and many photoshop filters just don't work with it. GIMP is a free image editing software - it works extremely well in the various unixes, don't let the free bit scare you. But it still is not as versatile as photoshop (yet) and I don't know how well the windows binaries compare with the Linux ones. You can find more info on the gimp at http://www.gimp.org/ Try to get 2.0 if they have 2.0 binaries for windows. Oh - and if you are on a mac, gimp also runs on that too - but uses the X11 windowing environment.
whayne_padden
Use Picture Window Pro, the best alternative to PS for a fraction of the price. Supports 16 bit files and has layers etc; in fact only lacks the RAW support of PS CS. Better than PSP nd PhotoImpact IMO.
