denny_kyser
Can hair lighting be done with out a boom? I am really wanting to add to my portraits with hair lighting but dont have a boom stand. How can I position the light so that it highlights the hair with out falling onto the subject, or is it a must to get a boom stand. If so what kind should I get? Also do any of you use a home made type light modifier to control the light.
elf
I bought a couple of Hakuba light clamps and hang my hair light from a bookshelf behind my subject in the studio space in my living room. The Hakuba clamp has a ball and socket joint with hotshoe base. I use a Wein peanut slave to trip the hair light. As for light modifiers, sure. A few months ago I bought a white tablecloth and a couple of 30" hula hoops and made fine diffusers for my two remotely fired strobes. Some people like to use those frosted shower curtain liners as well. Many people use heavy tin foil to make snoots, also.
christopher_newkumet
I place my hair light just out of the frame pointing toward the camera. no problem...gives a more feathered effect anyway
watchin
As mentioned you don't need a boom, it just makes it easier sometimes. If you have trouble finding the Hukabar clamps, I've used the Bogen "super clamp" with equal success. B&H has them (I think they're around $25-35.. You can do the same thing with a tall light stand and a weight bag on the legs (higher you go, longer the moment arm, harder the crash...weight it down or be sorry WARNING!). Play with it, have fun.
