chris_hawkins
Is this real or is it a spoof? If real, we are left with 2 questions. What is the price and when is it available.
antony_bichon
Is this another attempt to blame the French?
Weird that Canon would annouce on the French market first (maybe Canadian)... ususally French are not as great consumers as the American are.
And I thought it was "Canon Know How"!

:)
Antony
mark u
The pdfs were copied from the Canon France site - I guess their web techies were testing but left the door open to the outside world. Access was swiftly withdrawn, but too late.
beauh44
There's an interesting article in this month's Pop Photo (or is it Shutterbug?) anyway, the author talked about photos that surface on the Internet of the next, "new" Canon cameras that are obviously doctored-up. He said he saw one that was a supposed successor to the 1Ds - except it had a film re-wind button (it was really a 1V) on it. D'oh!! That said, interestingly enough, the same article speculated that a new 8 Mp camera from Canon would surface at the PMA in February. And even though I can't speak French, I muddled through grubbel's page a bit and it looks pretty legit to me. Perhaps an advertisement fell out of someone's briefcase somewhere. ;-) Bottom line - we probably won't know for sure until they announce it officially or start sending out evaluation units to people. If true, it'll make some big prints! Best wishes . . .
mike_sazhin
Can anyone manage a rough translation? What I got is that it can do 8 megapixels at 8.5 fps for 40 images... Nikon's goin down
olivier_de_lame
Hi, I cannot do a full translation, but here are the main differences with respect with EOS 1D (I): - 8.2 Megapixels - Up to 8.5 frames/second for the new buffer of 40 Jpeg frames or 20 RAW frames - New processor New white balance (ultra-precise) - 2 slots for CF and SD - 50 to 3200 ISO (in fact 100 to 1600, but with possibility to go to 50 and 3200 trough CF (??)) - New E-TTL (They call this E-TTL II); will work with EX - LCD screen of 230000 pixels. - CMOS sensor. - Much more expensive :-) (Did you expect the opposite ?) 25asa
Here is a rough translastion of one of the PDF files listed above. There was mention of April 2004- so maybe thats when this will be out. I wonder if the 1Ds will get any improvements. Here it is below: Directly inspired of the EOS-1D, the EOS-1D II becomes the newreference pro: Sensor CMOS 8,2 Megapixels, motorization up to 8,5i/sec up to 40 images JPEG in sequences, new processor DIGIC, 2residences memory board, news measures E-TTL with the flash.Again, Canon confirms with an effectiveness and a speed of innovation, its total engagement in the development of its system numerical reflexcamera EOS. After the advent of the EOS-300D, the numerical accessibleone to general public, after the very general-purpose EOS-10D, and theEOS-1DS with sensor full format, Canon reconsiders the front of thescene with a new occupational numerical reflex camera which comeslogically in the place from the EOS-1D. the EOS-1D II is not satisfiedto be a simple substitute but on the contrary, is affirmed within thisnumerical range EOS by a marked personality and many innovations whichwill allure the most demanding professionals. the EOS-1D II is a esthète smoothness of image thanks to a sensorCMOS of 8,2 million effective pixels for a quality of image of veryhigh resolution. It is also affirmed like the tool of infernal rateson many plans: give rhythm of catch of sight carried uninterrupted to8,5 im/s (8 im/s for the EOS-1D) with a number of maximum sights persequence of 40 sights in broad JPEG (21 for the EOS-1D), anexceptional endurance of the obturator: 200 000 releases minimum(150.000 for the EOS-1D), a port IEEE 1394 to 4 pins allowing atransfer at the speed of 100 Mo/s. It adds to it from now on aremarkable speed of image processing thanks to its processor DIGIC ofnew generation and an increased speed as regards writing on the memoryboard. In the field of storage, not only the EOS-1D II accepts thesupports of recordings of more than 2 Go but it in addition has 2residences to use 2 types of memory boards (1 CF and 1 SD) whoserecording can be simultaneous or selective. The total control of returned colors is ensured by 5 matrices withclear identification of their specificity (Standard, Portrait, Highsaturation, Espace Adobe RVB, weak saturation) more 2 matricespersonnalisables and a histogram RVB which makes it possible tocontrol the distribution of the primary colors in the image. TheEOS-1DII allows a new approach as regards adjustment of balance of thewhite by the integration of a numerical filter color which makes itpossible to apply effects of corrections equivalent to those obtainedwith filters DC (9 levels of correction in bleu/ambre andmagenta/vert). A new measurement flash E-TTL even more precise, with analysis of the distance from the subject via optics. It offersalso a comfort increased in the phases of visualization of therecorded images: a display screen of 230.000 pixels for an optimalresolution in posting of the images recorded, rotation of the verticalsights automatic or manual, possibility of enlarging of 1,5x with 10xon 15 levels, video exit. Compatible Pictbridge a simple connectionUSB with a printer makes it possible to immediately print after thecatch of sights the photographs carried out. Software side File ViewerUtility profits from a new development which increases itsperformances and the possibilities offered to the user: speed oftreatment of files RAW, faster posting of the images, palletsseparated for adjustments RAW and the adjustments from tonal curves, posting of infos IPTC (infos of telecommunications) and new functionof enlarging of a zone of the image for an accurate check of thedevelopment. patrick_smeaton
I hope to god there is a least one mistake: According to those specs, Canon is still stuck on using NiMH batteries for their pro cameras and (the MUCH better) Lithium-Ion batteries for all others. What complete stupidity!
dmitry_apresian
Doesn't it sound a little strange that in 2004 Canon would release a camera with an 8.5MP sensor and a USB 1.1 connection, not a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed one? It would still be backwards compatible with USB 1.1 but would actually provide an alternative to firewire.
david arnold eugene, oreg
You can read Canon's 1D Mk II press release (in English) on dp Review. At the end of the release there's a link to a detailed "preview" (not a hands-on review) by Phil Askey. US price is $4,499.
