wonderful, large town with wonderful back streets and friendly

people.

I spent about 10 days in Hanoi a couple of years ago and by the time I left I really like the place. My initial impressions weren't so good. I arrived in Hanoi on the train from Beijing competely off my trolley - sleep deprivation and cheap Chinese brandy- and found the street hustlers to be a complete pain and a disappointment. I naively expected something different in a supposedly communist country.

 

However after a couple of days detox and oodles and oodles of pho, I really began to appreciate the place. Of course, the pukka french cognac helped.

I guess human nature and the edifying effects of french cognac are the same anywhere.

I loved Hanoi, was there in 2001. Preferable to Ho Chi Minh for me. Hoi An was the most beautiful. Would love to explore the country further, but it was a choice of getting to Angkor or having more time in Vietnam, so Angkor won!!
