Lenses

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am interested in purchasing an off brand wide angle lens for my

Rebel ti. Are there any suggestions or others who have done the

same? I would like to not spend the $600+ right now if I can spend

less. Perhaps the future will se me invest in the Canon hardware,

but for now my budget doesn't allow.

Thanx!

Michael, are you referring to Canon wide-angle zooms? You can buy very sharp Canon wide angle primes for well under $600.

The excellent EF 24mm f2.8 goes for just over $200 mint/used, and the very sharp EF 28mm f2.8 is around $130 or so. An EF 35mm f2 is $180 to $200.

If you are set on getting a zoom, check out the EF 20-35mm USM, which is $300 to $350.

All of these Canon lenses will outperform the off-brand lenses, and have better resale value, too. (Just be sure to get the dedicated Canon hood to prevent flare with lenses this wide).

Hi Michael,

I second the Sigma 20mm or 24mm f1.8. They are amazing lenses for what you pay for. And they are only about $300 approx. The Sigma 20mm f1.8 is comparable in quality to my Canon 17-40 f4L, IMHO........but what do I know ? (That's why I still keep my Sigma lenses, although I have the 17-40L).

Check out my Sigma shots (most were taken with the Sigma 20mm f1.8):

Do not buy an off brand lens...

For $120 or so used Canon 22-55mm USM (58mm filters)

This is my main lens for my Rebel TI...

For $350 or so new Canon 20-35mm USM (77mm filters)

As someone pointed out, get the correct lens hoods.

The problem with photodo and photozone opinions is that there is no standard against which individuals rate a given lens. If someone has only used one focal length of a particular lens it is impossible for that person to know how it would compare against others of the same length. I thought that the second and third lenses that I bought were perfect until I replaced each of them! Good luck!
